2013 Cadillac XTS Gets Latest GM Safety Tech
Cadillac‘s 2013 XTS will get new safety features starting this fall that make it GM’s most technically advanced production car to date.
Known as sensor fusion, GM’s latest safety system uses a complex mix of tools to alert drivers of potential hazards. Essentially, it combines GM’s list of safety technologies and as the name would suggest, fuses them to provide a greater level of information to the driver than was available on past GM vehicles.
“We believe sensor fusion will enable future active safety systems to handle a greater number of inputs to provide 360 degrees of crash risk detection and enhanced driver assist features,” said Bakhtiar Litkouhi, GM Research and Development lab group manager for perception and vehicle control systems.
While the alerts XTS drivers will enjoy aren’t new, the way GM is integrating them into one system is.
“A system that combines the strengths of multiple sensing technologies and expertly manages those inputs can provide advisory, warning, and control interventions to help drivers avoid collisions and save lives,” Litkouhi said.
Looking into the future, GM says sensor fusion is a step toward autonomous driving, something we’ve already seen Volvo andBMW working on.
Beyond that, the company is using their sensor technology to help develop other systems like LIDAR, a light detecting and ranging technology that uses laser pulses to measure an upcoming vehicle’s proximity to the driver.

Key Innovations
Imagine calling in sick because you hurt yourself cranking too hard in a rush to leave the house. Well, it’s been a century since that excuse held any water thanks to Cadillac.
A century ago, the American automaker ushered in a new era of technological innovations with its electric starter that debuted on the 1912 Cadillac Touring Edition. Prior to that, people had the enjoyment of trying to start their car with a hand crank, which took a lot of muscle and a bit of hope.
Back in those days, hand cranking to start a car could be so tough that it could break a person’s arm, or worse. As cars grew larger so did their engines, which meant it would take even more effort to start them. Enter Cadillac who arguably changed the entire game with their electric self starter.
“Hand cranking was the No. 1 injury risk in those early days of the automobile,” said Greg Wallace, director of the General Motors Heritage Center.
Considered one of the most significant innovations in the history of the automobile, Cadillac began a marketing spree that involved showing women driving their vehicles, proving that anyone could start their cars and drive away safely and easily. Since then, the company spent the last century continuing to innovate with many new technologies that are not only seen in their vehicles, but in many elite sports cars in today’s market.
Some of these innovations include automatic climate control and heated seats, auto headlights, first tilt-telescoping steering wheel, air-cushion restraint system, OnStar, Magnetic Ride Control, and more recently, CUE. Cadillac is particularly proud of their Magnetic Ride Control which has been adopted by other automakers “on a handful of elite sports cars.”
“As a premium brand even in its earliest days, Cadillac positioned itself as a technology and innovation leader as a way to set it apart from the dozens of other auto companies,” Wallace said.
Despite the myriad innovations Cadillac can claim, there are still some serious faults in the not-so-distant past that we’re inclined to mention. For example, the Escalade was, for years, one of the easiest – and most expensive cars to steal. It wasn’t until the current model year that Caddy caught on and started making life harder for fiends running the luxury SUVs onto flatbeds and into chop shops.
2013 Cadillac ATS
Cadillac has released a dozen or so new photos of its upcoming2013 ATS sedan along with a new video showing off its lightweight chassis, further teasing us about the new model that hasn’t even had its pricing announced yet.
The luxury American automaker also went so far as to compare the ATS 2.0L turbo variant against its German counterpart, the BMW 328i with a 2.0L turbo motor. The ATS will pack 270-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque compared to the BMW 240-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. In addition, Cadillac wanted to remind everyone about their Magnetic Ride Control while the ATS will also have massive Brembo brakes with four-piston calipers while the BMW has a single-piston, sliding-caliper design.
The 2.0L turbocharged engine won’t be the only powerplant Cadillac will offer with their new ATS sedan; it’ll also get a 2.5L four-cylinder with 200-hp and 188 lb-ft of torque, and a larger 3.6L V6 with 318-hp and 267 lb-ft of torque.
Hopefully we’ll get pricing info soon on the new ATS sedan and we’ll have a clearer picture whether or not it’ll be a real BMW killer.
